about

In these tracks I'm working with material along the way to something else; they're study pieces.

In both of them I'm exploring the sounds within sound, the sounds which exist once attention can be given to an intentional listening.

In "Wa‘ahila Sketch 2," I've recorded the sound vibrations of electricity pylons that cross Wa‘ahila Ridge. The power trunks connected to these pylons create an Aeolian harp when the wind is right. You can hear this harmony within the sounds of birds, lawnmowers, distant aircraft, and the metallic sounds of the pylons themselves expanding and contracting in the sun.

This is a sketch for a larger field-recording & electronics performance I'm planning for summer of 2023.

"The Wide Pacific" was built off a couple lines in a folk song which casually mention the Pacific. I've stretched the sound using two different digital techniques--one playing and replaying small pieces of audio to create a wavelike texture, and one via a command line operation which creates microscopic fragments of sound to repeat and stretch. Within these stretched and layered sounds different overtones and harmonies emerge.

"Wa‘ahila Study 5" is another working of the field recording from the utility pylon, using some motion that was inspired by a Disquiet Junto prompt about using amounts of silence in a piece of music. The study didn't adhere strictly to the prompt, obviously. But it was a good start in exploring ways to segment and process the field recording.

Over time, I may add more sketches to this album as I have with _New Function_ and _100.100_.
