about

This is a live recording of improvised music on the double bass recorded on October 17, 2019 at Gateway Arts Center in Holyoke, Mass. as part of Bonnie Kane's "Thursday Experiment" series. Vitek. who immigrated here from what is now the Czech Republic, is the guy who rehabbed the building, is a fan of the music, and is himself a musician.

"Block heater no longer required" is a memory of winter.

"Come Sunday" is an exploration of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday."

"This arc won't bend itself" How long? Not long.

Star House is the name of the tiny house my musical collaborator Toussaint St. Negritude is building in Vermont. In this solo improvisation I use many of the techniques I like to use in our duo, Jaguar Stereo!, while he reads poetry or plays bass clarinet. In these Covid-times, when there are no live shows and audiences, I find myself enjoying live documents like this one--the sound of conversations among friends in the hallway, a distant singing sound from a band in another part of the venue (I think it was Luna that night), the sound of the motor of a weather blimp whispering past--sounds that happen in the world when we can all be together to enjoy them.

Normally for a live recording I'm shy and skip over the clapping. But friends, this far into it, I miss that sound. Not so much for my own ego (though it does feel good) but because those hands are attached to people I can meet and learn from and talk with and get to know at the end of an evening.
